Performance Art emerged in contrast to theater and other art forms in the 1960’s, focusing on the artist’s body as the medium, and the actions taken by the artist as the art work. Performances were often videotaped and photographs were taken. In this way, the performance was ephemeral, and required being witnessed, with photographs and videos serving as an archival record. Artists such as Vito Acconci, Laurie Anderson, Dan Graham and others were considered both Performance Artists and Conceptual Artists, Performance being a subset of Conceptual Art.
